We’ll understand if you want to stay in the castle on the cold, snowy days during your visit. There’s a roaring fireplace, a billiards table, historic art, and some rich red wines — sitting by the fire with a book while looking out at the snowy grounds is tempting. But you want to venture forth for something a little more bracing, we have some ideas.
Just five miles from the castle is Avalanche Ranch Hot Springs, which offers mineral-rich, naturally-heated waters that will help you melt your stress away. With two pools connected by a waterfall, there’s no better place to unwind after a long day. It’s especially nice in the winter — there’s nothing nicer than watching the snow fall through the rising steam. Allow us to call and assist with scheduling your adventure.
If you’re interested in enjoying some of the best of Colorado’s rugged wilderness, there are dozens of miles of doubletrack roads and hiking trails that can still be accessed in the winter, whether by snowshoes or cross-country skis. There are plenty of places in nearby Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, or Aspen to rent equipment, and then the Colorado backcountry will be your oyster.
John Osgood didn’t just build the Redstone Castle, he built much of the town of Redstone itself. This charming little village, with a full-time population of less than 100, has a church, a pizza place, an ice-cream parlor, and several antique shops packed with mountain town souvenirs. There’s even a small skating rink maintained by the community, perfect for a few turns in the crisp air. If you’re in the mood for a calm, casual day in town, you can while the hours away just walking up and down the street!
If you want to do some skiing, there’s no better place to do it than Western Colorado. Aspen has thousands of acres of skiable terrain for skiers of all ages and skill levels, just an hour from Redstone Castle. Or for a closer experience, the City of Carbondale is known for its Nordic Skiing. Explore numerous cross-country skiing trails with great snow conditions and there are nordic specific trails that are groomed when the conditions are right.
