The Redstone Castle is a bed and breakfast unlike any other in Colorado. These days it welcomes a different sort of aristocracy, no less worthy of the royal treatment—wives, mothers, daughters—all of whom deserve to be treated like a queen.
The one-time home of coal baron John Osgood was once a bastion for business dealings and a place of entertainment for America’s ruling class. Today, the boutique hotel located in Colorado’s Crystal River Valley near Glenwood Springs is a historic landmark that welcomes guests to rub elbows with the past.
Imagine whisking her off to a castle retreat hidden away in a quiet Colorado mountain valley. She’ll never forget the time she spent Mother’s Day, her birthday, wedding engagement or anniversary in a castle, with her very own suite, nonetheless—it will become a keepsake memory she’ll treasure forever.
The Redstone Castle is regally authentic down to its bones—from its stone and English Tudor exterior to interior adornments that include one-of-a-kind Tiffany & Co. light fixtures, William Morris wall coverings, Gustav Stickley wood paneling and the Osgood coat-of-arms intricately carved into the massive stone fireplace in the castle’s Great Room.
Just as owner John Osgood preferred to entertain a small number of guests at a time so that he could dote on them with undivided attention, so too the Redstone Castle lets only seven of its nine rooms for an exquisite, intimate experience. Castle caretakers and hosts Peter and Jennifer Pazour will welcome you upon arrival with an informal reception and private tour of the premises.
The historic castle bedroom suites where she’ll be staying feature antiques from the era, colorful Italian-tiled fireplaces, cozy quilts. Each suite has an adjoining sitting room ideal for private relaxation and an en-suite bathroom that showcases original fixtures and modern amenity comforts.
To truly feel like the queen of the castle, overnight guests have an exclusive opportunity to wander freely around, savoring the sense of place and exploring its special places. Sit for a spell in the library with its abundance of books, green-tinted leather walls and gold-glazed ceiling. If the red velvet walls of the Russian-style dining room could talk, you might hear the voices of princes and presidents. After dinner, spend some leisure time in the Music Room where a diamond dust mirror and meticulously restored frescoed ceiling are just a few of the highlights. Retreat to the Game Room on the ground level to play billiards, cards or a game of roulette. Other rooms and areas to explore include any unoccupied guest suites, the Great Room, servant’s quarters, the courtyard and grounds.
In the morning, Peter and Jennifer will have coffee and tea ready for you upon waking. They’ll then serve a delicious, homemade hot breakfast on the loggia, a sunny room that overlooks the castle grounds with views of Chair Mountain, the iconic red rock cliffs and seasonal waterfalls. Keep an eye out for herds of deer and elk often seen grazing on the expansive lawn.
